About
The National Initiative for Crop and Community Resilience (NICCR) is a proposed 10‑year, $1 billion national mission to transform Australian cropping and strengthen regional communities in the face of climate change, population growth, and resource constraints. Led by ANU, the University of Adelaide, the University of Queensland, and the University of Western Australia, the initiative aims to increase the value, productivity, and resilience of Australia’s cropping industry through long‑term, coordinated research that goes beyond traditional short funding cycles. NICCR focuses on four pillars—resilient crops, smarter plants, new digital enablers, and healthier regional communities—combining scientific innovation, digital technologies, and workforce development to deliver sustainable food, fibre, and biofuel production. By leveraging national-scale collaboration and co‑investment from government and industry, the initiative is projected to deliver a $17 return for every dollar invested, create thousands of regional jobs, boost export earnings, and secure intergenerational prosperity and food security for Australia.
