Interviews
AFII connects journalists with researchers who can speak with authority on the challenges reshaping Australia's food system — from climate impacts on crops to biosecurity, food security, agricultural technology and the energy transition in agriculture.
Primary AFII spokesperson: Professor Owen Atkin — Director, Agrifood Innovation Institute
Owen Atkin is a Professor of Plant Science and the Director of the Agrifood Innovation Institute at The Australian National University.
Professor Atkin has more than 30 years of research experience across Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. He holds over 20,000 citations and an h-index of 67, placing him among the most cited plant scientists in the world. He has been an editor of New Phytologist, one of the world's leading plant science journals, since 2007.
As Director of AFII, Owen works at the intersection of science, industry and government to translate research into practical solutions for the agrifood sector. He is currently leading and contributing to research on heat tolerance in wheat, crop energy use efficiency, and the application of hyperspectral technology to improve agricultural productivity.
Professor Atkin is available to comment on food security, the impact of climate change on Australian agriculture, crop science and innovation, and the role of research institutions in building long-term agricultural resilience.
