November was a dynamic month for the ANU Agrifood Innovation Institute (AFII), marked by events that showcased collaboration, entrepreneurship, and the future of food systems—from global partnerships to local innovation. Here’s what stood out:

Strengthening Pacific Partnerships

AFII was honoured to welcome President Alvaro Lario and Country Director Candra Samekto from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to ANU. The discussion focused on how Australia can support IFAD’s Regional Strategic Opportunities Programme in the Pacific. Professor Meg Keen provided an insightful overview of ANU priorities in the region, highlighting critical on-the-ground needs.

The visit also included an engaging panel session with IFAD, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DAFF) and Professor Stephen Underhill from MORDI Tonga exploring opportunities to connect Australia’s agrifood expertise with Pacific development priorities — particularly in the face of climate shocks, logistics constraints, and food security challenges. IFAD also learned about ANU’s world-leading research and infrastructure that can deliver real-world impact for vulnerable communities.  My key takeaways from the IFAD event are that:

  • Rural development in the Pacific goes beyond agriculture alone
  • Climate resilience and food security are inseparable
  • Connectivity and supply chains matter as much as what happens on-farm
  • Health and nutrition sit at the centre of agrifood policy
  • Inclusion is a delivery requirement, not an add-on
  • Partnership and coordination are the only workable pathways in small island contexts.

This valuable discussion reinforced a shared ambition for Pacific-led, climate-resilient agrifood systems supported by long-term partnerships. AFII looks forward to continuing work with IFAD, DFAT, Pacific governments, and regional organisations to translate research into impact for rural communities.

Driving Local Innovation

Closer to home, AFII hosted a panel featuring businesses in our Agrifood Hub that have successfully transitioned from research to enterprise.  On the panel were:
Dr Debbie SaundersStephen Trowell PhDPablo Rozas Larraondo, Andrew HorsleySamantha McGaughey, with the discussion facilitated by Danielle Neale MBA GAICD.

Each panel member shared their entrepreneurial journeys and reaffirmed the critical role Canberra’s innovation ecosystem plays in helping founders grow, connect, and create impact. Across diverse experiences, a few themes stood out:

  • The gap between academia and industry is real — bridging it is essential!
  • Understanding your customer is everything
  • Innovation moves faster in business than in research
  • Don’t overthink it — test, try, fail, and learn
  • A strong innovation ecosystem makes the journey possible.

Later in November, we hosted an informative session with Andrew Chalet (TGLAW), providing expert advice on commercialisation, IP, and Varvara Miranova shared support services available through ANU. Complimentary sessions from Amanda McAlpine (AEA), and Kerrie Jackson (ACTivate Capital) highlighted start-up funding opportunities and practical tips for founders.

These events created valuable connections and knowledge-sharing opportunities for those embarking on the start-up journey — helping navigate what can often be complex terrain.

As we wrap up November, one thing is clear: collaboration and innovation are at the heart of building resilient agrifood systems. Whether forging partnerships across the Pacific or empowering local entrepreneurs, AFII remains committed to translating research into real-world impact. Together with our partners, we’re shaping a future where food security, sustainability, and inclusivity are not just aspirations — they’re achievable goals.
