Julian Craven knew he wanted a career in agriculture. What he did not expect was how much an internship would broaden his understanding of the opportunities in the industry beyond science.

In 2025, Julian stepped out of the lecture hall and into the world of advocacy, policy and engagement with an internship at Sheep Producers Australia.

From theory to practice

As part of his internship with Sheep Producers Australia, Julian undertook a project that explored how industry organisations represent producers and influence government decision-making. The project allowed him to lean into his interest in policy and science communication while working on a real challenge facing the sector.

He examined how information flows between growers and producers, peak bodies and government, and where communication gaps are occurring. Along the way, he had the chance to work with stakeholders across the livestock industry, providing insights into parts of the agriculture sector he had not previously encountered in his degree.

Developing skills that matter

The internship strengthened Julian’s research and stakeholder engagement skills and challenged him to communicate clearly across diverse audiences. Producing a formal report for Sheep Producers Australia gave him experience in translating diverse perspectives into practical recommendations.

It also expanded his professional network. He remains in contact with industry connections made during the placement, which is an invaluable opportunity for his future career.

“Completing an AFII internship with Sheep Producers Australia gave me real-world experience in areas that I had no exposure to before. It allowed me to apply classroom skills to a real-world problem,” Julian said.

Everyone should do it

For Julian, the experience confirmed his interest in the agricultural sector and gave him confidence that his degree would provide him with the opportunity to make practical, real-world impacts.

“It is real hands on experience. You see how the industry works and how your degree translates beyond university.”

Internships offer students the chance to test their interests, build networks and contribute meaningfully to the industry while still studying.
